I think that he had the boots augmented with the pearl. The text from the merchant makes it sound like you will get points for both if you sell, but in reality you will only get the points for the base item back.

You can get a Lillu's Distiller (by donating) and then remove the aug safely. You will then get both amounts when you sell the 2 items independently (item and aug), while at the same time helping the server with your donation
