Is THF right for me? Noob mage questions..

I just came across this server today and have been reading up on what I can. It seems this server has a good chunk of content to offer for all forms of players (soloers, groupers, raiders). My questions though revolve mostly around the Mage class. I've always been a really big pet user in every mmo, or game I play, but before starting on a game I like to know if the pets are going to be balanced well. I know from on live, and especially other emulated servers, pet balance has almost always been a pretty huge struggle for devs.

Mostly I'd like to know a few things:

Will I be able to solo, or at least use a cleric bot to be able to level to 70 by myself via pet tanking? I'm going to end up doing a lot of soloing because of my sporadic play times. And I'll be coming to this server by myself mostly (most of my friends are too addicted with wow) so I'd need to find a decent guild here and everything, so I just expect to be soloing for a good while.

How do pets fair in regards of being able to tank content that's reflective of my effort and gear (pet focuses, pet tank AAs). This is the part I most often get dissapointed in so it's the question I wish to have answered the most. I'm not saying my pet should out tank a a similarly geared warrior in defensive, but if I put strong effort into getting the best pet focus for the content, and flush out all of my pet AAs, I want to be able to pet tank content that reflects my effort put into my class. What I'm used to seeing is on a lot of servers, pets start out pretty good at top level when compared to a low geared, 0 AAd melee/tank class. But by the end of a tier of content, even a ranger/monk without capped out defensives will outtank my focused fully pet AAd earth pet, which makes me feel very left behind in my efforts and doesn't make me feel very even with those classes.

Also, are there halfways decent pet focuses to be achieved as a soloer, or light grouper?

Thanks all for your time!

Insedeel.

You will absolutly be able to solo to 70s - mages easily one of the easiet solo classes on THf specialy due to monstrous pet upgrades ;)

Each of the pets has become far more specialized that it was on live, so each is very on its own:

Earth - monster tank
Fire - nuker caster (he casts high power dots and nukes and never goes OOM)
Water - monk with massive regeneration bonus with stun procs
Air - Rogue which can go into backstab frenzy - specially great when it doesn't have to tank.

You can look up pet stats here:

Once you manage to get your Epic 1.5 - you will get even scarier pet ;)

And epic 2.0 pet is even scarier - but that you will require a lot of raiding to obtain

Wow, wasn't expecting an actual GM/Dev response hehe, and especially not that quickly!

Thank you so much for that reply, you've twisted my arm. I'll be making my first THF toon tonight!

np ;)
just wanted to add, that of course earth pet can't substitute fully geared up warrior, and rogue pet can't match up with fully geared rogue, but if you running up with a cleric bot - your earth pet will do just fine ;) Maybe even use monk pet for tanking to get some extra dps going.
And at low level Fire pet can unleash hell at even con mobs all by itself ;)

A couple more questions. Is there any guide as to where pet focuses drop? I'd like to start planning out my progression on improving my pets as I level up.

Also, does the imporved pet discipline work on this server? ( /pet focus command ).

Thanks!

Pet foci atm kinda bogus see here http://forum.thehiddenforest.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=124&t=4114

There is no guide here however i believe first obtainable augment with pet foci on it comes from Plane of Valor as random drop.
Than you have one obtainable via LDoN points.
Mage Boots on Thurg/Kael boots got em.
Plane of fire has another Aug drop but i believe only during the fennin event.
Plane of Fear has it on the Grotesque Girdle (summons also currently best pet toys).
VP has it atleast one on the Silk class legs i believe.

That list is only somewhat accurate though but that are the only pet foci items i have atm in my head.

The PoValor drop is shared in Sebilis/PoValor and i believe SolB.

Yep I think you're right, at least your db shows it as dropping in solb off kobolds and whatnot.. Guess I'll be heading there in my 40s hehehe :)

Thanks for the info!

I didn't want to create a new thread for this question so I decided I'd ask here. I noticed that a lot of the pet focuses are augs and are all/all. Does this mean that pet focuses work on the non-primary pet classes as well? (Enc/SK/Shm/Dru, etc) I would think they would work on the SK pets since the SK pets are lower tiered versions of the necro pets, but I guess I'm not positive either.

Thanks!
