I've found that mage + cleric bot worked well when I made my mage originally. It'll get you up to max level fairly easily. For raiding/tier + it won't work without a real tank to play, but you'll do decent damage thanks to eventually getting the t8 pet.

Any tank class + healer bot will work too, but dps will be slower.

I know way too much random stuff.

Problem would definitly be solved if you could box a tank and a healer (really not hard), so a rogue bot would do the dps. I played a long time with necro/shaman and a cleric bot (before t8 was on) and I had to face the healing problems pretty fast, that's why I started my tank.
Of course now with t8 pet it's much better, but you still gotta be able to pay for it...and it won't allow you to solo tier 1 or 2.
Anyway, tank/healer bot or t8pet class/healer bot will bring you to level 70 but you will be stuck after.

Soooo...box tank/healer if possible :) and rogue bot rocks really.

The answer to that question is that there is NO character/bot combination that will allow you to experience most of the game content by themselves. In this game you must account for three jobs - tank, heals, dps. Your character will adequately account for one of them. A bot will do half of a second job (unless you chose a melee dps bot, then they do that pretty adequately). That leaves you with one job undone. So, if you want to experience THF content to its fullest you have to solve this by one of three avenues:
1) other people. The best way to ensure help is to get into a guild that has a lot of members, not just a lot of toons being controlled by few people.
2) multibox. this is easier than you might think thanks to the legality of mq2 and other third party software on this server
3) donor equipment. Donor equipment is game changing because you can equip some toons right out of the need for one of the three jobs. For example, a heavily donored sk, pally, war, bard, monk (and maybe a few others too) can operate quite well without any healing all the way through t6 bosses.
So, it is just a matter of you deciding which of these three avenues of uberness suits you. Some people do all three!

If the question is, rather, "what class of tune will get me furthest without any of the above three options," the most popular answer is going to be a mage I suspect.

Hope this helps

Honestly between mage and necro, I go for necro without hesitation, just because of their self healing that deals dmg too. That allows you to tank whenever your pet is low hp.

With an SK using their original donor weapon and good buffs (no other donors), I was able to solo up a lot of mobs up to tier 3. At that point the bosses started to overtake the SK consistently (there are 'too hard' bosses at each tier).

Downside is that the SK weapon is incredibly overpowered pre-70 as it is basically one click = kill (it's a massive dot, so you go from mob to mob) so you won't have much fun getting there.

Much patience required if you opt to do this.
