Dual wield skillups problem

Before I post as a bug, I figured to get a little more info. Im doing alt-p with a new warrior, and hes skilling up dual wield with a shield in his left hand. If the skillups occurred while I was bashing, I could understand maybe, but its happening while im just swinging and not mashing any buttons.
Looking to see if its happening in the main adventure line.

Seems like a bug to me. I'm not familiar with alt P so was wondering if it was a Shield of the Slain Unicorn type deal where the graphic is a shield but the item is a weapon with dmg/delay/ac. Crackpots and their theories.
