Tanking and Early Tier Progression

Hello folks!

I'm Koravus, been playing on THF for about a month now. Really enjoying it, but I had a few questions about some tanking struggles I'm having right now.

There is a great disparity between my ability to tank and the content I am geared from. My guild is a new progression guild and we are in the process of catching up to current content. We have a few "geared" tanks, but I really wanted to know what I should be doing to catch up to them.

Class: Paladin
AA: Approx 200
Gear: Epic 2.0 - ST/PoFire armor with 35 AC augs
Currently farming ST/PoA augs.

I am finding that I cannot tank much aside from trash in ST/Fire, and I won't even mention how worthless I am in PoA. I want to be able to run with the big boys so to speak, but I seem to be falling short. What am I missing out on? What should I be working on? Thanks in advance for any responses.

Put AC augs in you epic 2.0 and use it on your back. Grab a sword and board to boost AC.

As im sure you know, AC is king - go for the max! Grab a ldon slot 1 aug for your ear. Easy LDONs will drop ~30ac slot 1.

Make sure that you have Defense modifiers on your gear. I'm not completely sure what they do but you should seek out gear with %dodge, %defense, %riposte and so-on. The glowing BP from stillmoon may be better than the Traitor.

Get some help with Stillmoon B - mobs are insanely hard for someone around t4 but a solid group can get Invaluable loot fairly easily.

Lastly, this content was designed for raid progression. You can whip through it if you outgear it, but if your on par you may need dedicated heals.
Thanks for the memories.

To add on the post above: You also need more aa's. Maxing your defensive aa's will give you a great boost in mitigation and avoidance. I would reccommend doing that first then working on your gear. Sword and Shield for sure epic 2.0 in your back slot. There is a decent 1hs from sleepers from master of the guard iirc. If you ever need any help don't hesitate to send me a tell in game. g'luck!

Kiss of life augs also. LDON ones are 300 pts each and type 8. Makes a difference until you can get the T5/POA augs.

As a tank all you need to worry about is ac/defense/riposite mods for most of your tanking life. Back in the day I used to run LDON's to get the LDON armour for my warrior, as its comparable to T5 armour. That was before the LDON tokens came out, so now its much easier. Was a chore but I ended up with over 400 LDON's ran, a stack of exp/aa and a whole set of LDON armour that kept me good until T6/VP.

As mentioned previously, do an easy boss ldon, they can drop the 30ac type 1 augs. LDON armour with 40ac type 2, 35ac type 8 and 30ac type 1 is much better than the armour availble for you at your level.

Gearing is 99% of the time sink in EQ. Just as you gear up for your tier and can handle the mobs, up a tier you go and have to replace all your gear again :)

I have to agree with the others. I'd prioritize it like this:
(i) Equip that 1hs from Sleepers Tomb that I see in your bags and a shield. Epic 2.0 in back or range. Replace whichever is the weaker item.
(ii) AAs. You need maxed defensive AAs and also the extended enhancement line for buffs. That will prolong the duration of your clicky defensive disciplines. And be sure you're using the def clickies if you aren't already! (I see you have 2 of the 3 available to you)
(iii) Prioritize 35ac augs in all of your gear but the fingers/ears. For those, instead use the quested augs from Sleepers/PoAir.
(iv) Solo Aura. Depending upon your group make up, some can be massively helpful.
(v) Know your support classes and craft your group to make use of them. If you've got a necro and can't keep up on heals, then have that necro spam the t8 lifetap to give you a little edge. Twist AC songs on the bard, etc.
(vi) Clicky buffs. Make sure you getting that Ring of the Constable dodge buff up and any clicky AC buffs. They add up.

Hope that helps. Your magelo looks great. You've covered almost all of the tank foci, your augs are good. With a full group you should have little trouble in fire and should be able make some progress in Air, I would think. My warrior was similarly geared when I first took down the air avatars (but wind was scary!).

I'm not trying to beat a dead horse, but just to reiterate a few things that were already said:

1.) You have four ranks of combat agility and four ranks of combat stability left to go. Get those!

2.) You have 0/3 ranks of shield block. Get it!

3.) Just like everyone else said, once you have shield block, stick that 2her in your back slot (it will be the best back slot item you'll get for a while), and get a shield / 1her. Sword of the Master is a great knight class 1hs from sleepers tomb, and having the epic 2.0 frees up an entire slot for a shiny new shield.

4.) reap the benefits of the extra defensive AA's and having a shield. The amount of difference a shield makes is more than just a boost to your AC and HP, even though that's a good enough reason already. You'll take hits far less with the shield block AA's. This applies to warriors as well, if you find that you can't tank something, put the extra sword away and grab a shield.

Don;t want to repeat too much as the most important stuff has been said but...

Going sword and board, along with getting shield block and the rest of your def AAs completed is going the make the biggest change.

You can pick up a ring with ancient enhancement focus from a named spider in the ascent. You will need to finish your defensive AAs and a good group. They hit hard but have low hp, its well worth the risk, it will make your def disc last longer, a lot longer.

Pick up the AAs for more buff slots if you havent already, you can hold off on the expensive ones for now, just get the 1st set. There are a lot of nice buffs to further boost your hp/ac/avoidance but you will need a lot of room for them all. Such as stronghold from the druid, a nice long term ds/ac buff.

Ask for the following buffs right before you engage the mob.
Unwavering Faith - cleric
Skin of Chaos (or reptile if they dont have the T4 version) - druid
Chaotic Elixir - any priest class

You mentioned you are a progression guild, but if you are using T8 spells get this before pull as well.
Moon Curse - druid (makes you crit heal more, and allows you to flurry)

These will give you a nice boost for those really tough names. All i can think of atm, feel free to hit me up in game any time you have questions. Send tells to Mary.
