I believe I have found a bug in the healing automaton. I have experienced this multiple times where the automaton just won't heal. I have experimented and believe I have narrowed it down to making him untargetable during combat.
Could someone else verify this?

Nope i noticed that making it untargetable before combat or during combat has nothing to do with it.
It seems to either work once you summon it or not for me.

Further testing has shown you to be correct.
