I think the simple answer that even makes sense as far as risk v. reward is to add 4 recipes for "Sorta Strange Liquid Material" or "Not So Strange Liquid Material" with the only difference being that it takes 2 of the materials instead of 4. You wouldn't mess with the fluid essence, I agree the drop rate for this is fine, I've even used it for some brewing skill ups when I had a bunch of extras.
