Bard as a tank

So I played a bard through alt P for fun, and have him with about 3300 ac. So the question is are bards able to tank raid mobs with enough AC? Better to start a warrior and drop bard?

Just trio ing it with a necrosis and cleric. No donor equipment as of yef

Bard tanking is bad for 2 reasons:

A bard that is tanking will inevitably get stunned and stop singing.

Bard's don't have any defensive clickies/disciplines.

You should level up a warrior/paladin/shadowknight if you want to seriously do progression raid tanking.

Yeah pretty much what Lumpa said.

Especially high end game you'll want an actual tank.

I don't disagree with the previous posters in that you should play one of the three tank classes if you want to progress very far.

That being said, you do have an optimal trio for a bard. There is no better dps class to accompany a bard tank than a necro. All others generate too much aggro. The pet is a good chunk of aggro-free dps, and if the necro spells ever overtake the bard in aggro... well there is FD for that. Further, you'll have to play Zuriki's Song of Shenanigans to maintain any semblance of AOE aggro, along with all of the Kiss of Life procs you can muster. Even with that, I have a feeling that adds will hop on the cleric and make quick work of your trio.

Alas, for a donor-free trio with a bard as a tank, I don't think you'll kill any bosses in T2, and very few in T1. Would be fun to try though! Can always add a tank later.

Besides this is all just speculation anyway. I have tanked T8 bosses (two of them) with a non-donor bard. It required several minutes of solo dps just to build up a strong enough aggro lead to unleash the raid dps, and lots of healers. Talk about the health bar playing ping pong... Was a blast though!

This thread has inspired me to see how high up our strongest bard can tank. :-) agro won't be a major issue with shenanigans and tactical enhancement (the latter also helping with damage avoidance).

That said, any raid tier progression encounter would be an extreme challenge for a non donator bard as main tank. But you can always try.

Calm down. No one said bards aren't cool :P .

Tanking as a character that isn't a real tank is a lot of fun though. My bst makes a good one a lot of a time lol. Not always though....
