4 Boxing

I was thinking of taking up 4 boxing... my thought was
Paladin
Cleric
2 Mages (Rogue Bot)
Do you guys think this would be a good combo? Or should I use Necro and Mage or Mage Beast Lord?

2 mages with T8 pets you wont need a rogue bot.

Will I be able to make it to the tier 8 with just 4 botting? Or can I buy the mage pet earlier?

Make friends have them buy the pets for ya. I have plenty of Godly points sitting there shoot me a tell in game when I'm on and I will get it for you.

If you're running 4, you may as well run 6 if your system can manage it. Learn [refer to Server rules about 3rd Party programs, thanks]. You can probably manage anywhere from beating T5-T6 with the 6. Not sure if the 4 could beat T4/T5 without donating. Either way you'll stay occupied for a few weeks/months regardless.
I run a similar setup of warr, cleric, mage, mage and my other two are shaman and bard. I have some donation gear but ive beaten some stuff through T7. Now I'm making a second group though because there's an event in T7 I can't beat without a knight tank for fear immunity.
Two mages are a nice setup for sure.

In a 6 man the shaman is just for buffing slows and the occasional back up heal? and do you even try to twist songs on a bard?

Go with Pally, Cleric, Magex2, Bard and Enchanter or Shammy for buffs/debuffs.
Yes you can twist on the bard with no problems but as above stated refer to 3rd party programs thread.

The /melody command in EQ allows for twisting, you don't have to use any other resources to do it for you.
Additionally, bards with fading memories can be very useful for skipping trash (when they can absorb the hits) using the CotH orb from Mirinella in ToV, and they're also useful for split pulling which isn't necessary very often.

In my experience, a T5 armoured non-warrior tank cannot survive avatars without multiple healers or enough DPS to kill them within a single defensive clicky. They can easily 1-round a non defensive tank with that level of gear (i.e. non donor), and they can 2-round a defensive tank with that level of gear, which rules out one healer.
I can't speak for the pets though, last time I saw a focused donor necro pet it could virtually solo T6 bosses with a bot healer (was a good 12 months back, may have been toned down)
