I generally don't run my mage on raids so I can't speak definitively on how survivable the pets are on T5-7 bosses. I generally log him in to loot the mage gear that would otherwise rot. :-P He is geared pretty well though and has the pet focus items, his 2.8, and the fear toys (weapons, and armor)...
