As for the Swarm of Decay pets they're really not that useful. Max hit of 310 or so i believe. If they are able to crit and flurry I've never seen it happen. Basically think of them as another DoT you can add on that is able to get partial resists and has a 30min reuse. Not bad for burst dps but not one of the very first AA I'd set my sights on.
Swarm of decay, a level 65 AA, adds one archer per AA level with a maximum of three levels.
Pets hit for MAX 301 (and most times for far less... say 20?). They also hit EXTREMELY slowly. Level 1 pet gets 3 shots off total.
Swarm is far from worthless. I love it.
At level three it typically parses in the 3000 - 5000 damage range. And that's with only one level of pet flurry. I'd imagine it does even better for those who have invested heavily in pet-related AAXP.
It's * instacast *, so you don't lose out on any potential DoT damage while casting.
Refresh is every 30 minutes, so you don't have to be as selective with it as Lifeburn. I get to use it several times a night raiding, instead of just once. Of course, nothing prevents you from using it along with Lifeburn, AoTD, epic pet, etc for some really impressive burst damage.
Other advantages include essentially zero push.
Plus it's cool.
The only significant negative I see is they have next to no hitpoints, so forget using them on AE mobs, unless you time it really well in between AEs.
Your mileage may vary, but don't knock it til you've tried it... especially at the new, lower cost.
