I just want to chime in from my end. I already harangued Micah this weekend (sorry again, Micah!) about this issue, because he was the first GM to respond to my request in-game. Anyway!
I spent pretty much the entire weekend in HoH, starting 2PM CST Friday and ending 11PM CST Sunday (with obvious breaks). When there were fewer than 100 players in the zone, the zone was perfectly fine. There was little lag (likely client-side).
A perfect example of this would be yesterday (Sunday) at about 9AM CST when I logged in. There were 35 or so players in the zone, and there was literally no lag. As more people logged in, the lag increased. I reset my Internet connection a few times during the day hoping to get improvement, but I can honestly say that this was definitely a zone population issue, with lag peaking at the 120 or so players in the zone when I logged out.
Now, as I explained to Micah (I tried at least), I do not want to see this zone instanced for guilds. I liked being able to interact with people outside my guild. The server is already very secluded as it is -- with the lack of grouping through early levels to general boxing through the raid tiers. I would just like to see an automated relocation of the AFK players (especially those around the zone entrance). On the low end, an hour seems very constraining; however, allowing them to remain in the zone indefinitely is not ideal.
Either way, and this is something I want to stress, the weekend was enjoyable with a lot of people from various guilds coming together for each other (killing particular spawns that people needed and the general feel of working together to generate gear for our "competition"). But with a semi-constant 100+ players in the zone, the amount of fun quickly diminished with sporadic zone-wide lag spikes and general disarray caused by the rapid destabilization of zone quality that comes with doing all things EQ.
