To add to what Niixnec says, for solo-toon non-donor play, yeah you can advance a little bit in THF due to the inherent balance changes that have been done...but the basic framework of the game is still EQ, i.e. a game that requires multiple toons.
That framework though, is thrown off-balance by donor gear. How much off-balance is determined by how much donor gear. There is a player here that whose main/fav toon is a heavily donored monk. Generally speaking, the only fights (including all the T9s) that he cannot beat are the fights that have been specifically scripted to require multiple toons, i.e. the player needs to (in a manner of speaking) be in more than one place at a time...or requires a specific spell or ability that is not found on monks. Keep in mind that he is also a very skillful player...all the donor gear in the world won't help with complex fights if you don't know how to play the game. or play the toon, or play the fight.
If I remember correctly, my lightly donored mage was able to solo up to and including Sleepers (I think).
As for multiboxing...yeah, I can understand not wanting that complexity if you are shooting for casual play. But fyi, there has already been a non-donor solo-player box raider that has beaten VT. But keep in mind, that this achievement was done by a very skillful player using a boxing program (probably MQ2). The use of an automation program is the only way a player will be able to properly play 24 toons at once (which is about what is required to beat a T9 zone without donor gear).
