You can also tell steam to back up the game for you, into handy CD sized chunks, then reinstall it whenever you choose (in case you didn't know this :))

Just an FYI, but the sale on Steam to get SoD for $2.50 has ended and it has returned to it's normal price of $19.99 for now. I hope that everyone who wanted it was able to get it before the sale ended! This client is great and that was quite a deal!

If SoD can really enhance the experience of playing on EQEmu, even $19 isnt that big a price to pay. The more SOE make, the more they are likely to keep bringing out expansions which will obviously benefit us with more options available in future clients.

I cant wait to see SoD integrated into EQ Emu :)

Anyone have any idea what the memory requirements of the SoD client are like? I tried out SoF for a bit, but couldn't get more than 3 instances to run on my computer with 2GB of RAM because it was eating 500+ mb per instance even on the lowest settings/no updated models/etc. I can 6 box perfectly fine with the Ti client on the same computer.

I know they recently did some memory optimizations to the eq client, but I don't know if the SoD release is recent enough for that or not.

And if anyone says 'memory is cheap' - well, so am I ;)

Well, I play with just about everything set to max, so SoD eats quite a bit of memory. It seems like it may handle memory better for multi-boxing, though. When I load up the first instance of SoD with max settings, it uses about 1GB of RAM, which is about what SoF uses with max settings. But, when I load up more instances of SoD, the extra instances only use a fraction of what the first one uses, and currently take about 400MB each. If you have settings all set to low for textures and effects, and have Luclin models turned off, I am sure it would be considerably less RAM usage than that. I haven't tried minimum settings yet to see how much it uses.

Even Titanium with max settings and Luclin models on can get well over 700MB of RAM usage for an instance of EQ. I don't think Titanium handles RAM as well for multi-boxing as SoD does, but haven't fully tested that yet for a good comparison.

It does definitely seem to be easier on the CPU when multi-boxing than any other client, so that should help performance.

Has anyone actually got SoD to work yet? I know the public LS doesn't handle it yet, but I keep getting UI errors when I try running it from eqgame.exe and I get privilege problems when trying to use the launcher.

Are you using a custom UI or something? There should be no UI errors with the default UI.

Also, yes, SoD works just fine, it just doesn't work on the Public Login Server (/tap @ Rogean). If you just want to test out the SoD client, you can do so by connecting to PEQ on their secondary Login Server by setting your eqhost.txt for SoD to this:

Code: Select all

[LoginServer]
Host=projecteq.net:5999

Though, to be able to log into that, you have to register your EQEmu account on the PEQ forums/website and associate your private and public LS accounts together. It is probably more work than most people want to do (not that hard really), but if you really want to test it out, that is the only current option other than making your own server and setting up your own login server. Though, hopefully it won't be much longer before Rogean gets the public Login Server working with SoD. Even then, you will still need to wait until THF has updated their source code to work with SoD. But, at least then you will be able to try the client out on other servers that are updated already just to see it working.

I've done nothing except the installation from the Steam client. I had two entries ... one for SoD and one for SoF. Did you have the same? Which one did you start the install from? My initial problems happened with trying the install from SoD ... downloading while started from SoF this time so we'll see what happens.

Depending on which one I started from, the auto-installed desktop icon was differently named. The /common/everquest folder looked normal though.

*Update* Still the same problem. I install via Steam which basically downloads the files as far as I know. Then I replace eqhost and create a patchme shortcut. At that point I still get the stupid UI errors. Oh ... maybe it has to do with full screen settings on my widescreen display? I dunno ... windowedmode=true doesn't work :(

First, yes, we all get the SoF download link as well from Steam when purchasing SoD. Not quite sure why, but it seems to be the exact same download from what I heard.

Second, if you used the shortcut that was created for you on your desktop automatically, then you used the wrong shortcut and probably got at least some of your files patched. If so, then you will need to delete your install folder and download it again. I haven't had to do that before with Steam, so I don't know offhand the exact steps to do it correctly so it will let you download it again. Maybe uninstall through steam? When you downloaded SoD, the first thing you should have done was to make a copy of that install folder right away before doing anything else. That would prevent it from getting messed up if you patched by mistake which is what sounds like happened.

Third, you still aren't going to be able to log in with SoD until the Login Server supports it.

Nope, none of those. I'm fully aware of how to get the client up and running on a typical system. Heck, I wrote the THF version of the connection guide :) I'm sure the files are not patched and that the only things done after the download is the altered eqhost, eqgame patchme shortcut, and my lame attempts to get eqclient not to throw me into fullscreen mode. I'm 99% sure it is an incompatibility with my laptop ... resolutions or something ... maybe I need to reinstall SoF from CD to grab a full eqclient and then retry SoD. Eh, when I have time I guess ... retired for a reason and expecting a new baby any day.

Thanks for the help Trev.
