Tradeskills: Quick Guides

FORWARD

I am a casual player who enjoys exploring, questing, and trade skills. I have tons of notes and have decided to share some of my secrets with you. As I gain more knowledge I'll update these guides to reflect this. Also note that these are tailored (pun intended!) to THF server - they're designed to use as many vendor items as possible. This means trade skills will be easier but more expensive to master.

A few things I'd like to mention before we get started.
- I assume you have at least basic knowledge of trade skills. There are plenty of 'getting started' guides elsewhere so I won't waste the space here.
- Traditional trade skills on this server are just for fun. The very best crafted items barely compare with the newbie starting equipment. (I have not had a chance to play with custom recipes (Alt-P and high level stuff) but I've heard they are quite nice indeed.) Also, these old school recipes can break at any time. As the devs customize the server more and more items are being changed. So don't freak out if it happens!
- The first 100 or so skillups will be a breeze. From 100-150 slows down a bit, then 150+ is where you start spending a LOT of time on the skill. If you lack patience then break up the crafting sessions.
- You are going to spend a load of cash on skillups. Any skill you take beyond 125 is going to get expensive. Grand mastery (300) will be very, very expensive.
- With all skills there will be a point where you just have to farm the materials.
- When farming please be aware of other people in the zone. Rule of thumb: (s)he who was there first has right-of-claim to a small area. Move farther into the zone, agree to share mobs, or leave entirely.
- There is a slightly higher chance of getting a skill increase when you successfully make an item versus have a failure.
- Technically, you can make a high skill item if you have little or no skill, but chances of success are extremely low. Example: with tailoring skill 88 I attempted 300 Tae Ew Hide Sacks (triv: 295) and only had 5 successes. That's 1.67% success rate.
- And finally, I'm pretty much cutting my own foot by giving away all my secrets. Well, not all of them... ;) I've already noticed several of my favorite hunting spots gaining popularity. If these guides circulate a bit be sure to expect competition now and then. Just keep it friendly and everyone goes away happy.

Oh okay, I'll give one final secret. I call it "Vendor skilling". Any portable trade skill container (sewing kit, fletcher's kit, etc) works while you have the vendor window open. Just open the merchant window, then open your kit. You have to use searched/favorited recipes and the combine/auto inventory buttons to make items but this saves a lot of time - you can buy new materials and sell finished products without having to constantly reopen the vendor. I haven't found any world containers close enough to a merchant to try this method, but I assume it would work also. Edit: yes, it works. Kaleras Darkanvil @ Plane of Knowledge (dwarven smithing buidling) is close enough to the forge to breeze through Banded like there's no tomorrow!

So, on to the guides! If you like them, or have a more efficient method, feel free to leave comments. For now there are a lot of blank spaces but don't worry. I'm practicing everything so I'll have the guides filled out soon.

Baking Guide

BAKING

Recipes
*everything combines in a Spit (carried) or Oven (world container)
Batwing Crunchies - 1 bat wings, 1 frosting - triv: 46
Fish Fillets - 1 fresh fish, 1 jug of sauces - triv: 82
Fish Rolls - 1 bat wing, 1 fresh fish - triv: 135
Filleted Bear - 1 bear meat, 1 fillet knife - triv: 143
Tae Ew Sandwich - 1 chunk of tae ew, 1 bread - triv: 188
Patty Melt - 1 bear meat, 1 cheese, 1 bread, 1 nonstick fry pan - triv: 192
Tae Ew Roll - 1 chunk of tae ew meat, 1 bat win - triv: 215
Candied Tae Ew - 1 chunk of tae ew, 1 frosting, 1 spices - triv: 268

Vendor Locations
Bat Wings - general merch in hub zone
Bear Meat - Melet Ironstove (PoK: -84x247), Daliea Saeiersa (Shadow Haven: 56x1704)
Everything else - Jaggedpine merchants (in building with banker)

Tool recipes
Filleting Knife (smithing) - water flask, 3 metal bits, scaler mold
Non-stick Frying Pan (smithing) - water flask, metal bits, ceramic lining (pottery), frying pan mold (sold in Jaggedpine)

How to get there

Okay, up to 135 is a breeze. Just grab about 400 bat wings and Elyse-aport to Jaggedpine. The various vendors there sell everything else you'll need including a spit. Follow the progression to 135 then decide if you'd rather make a few tools, or just farm the ingredients.

TOOLMAKERS - Buy a bunch of nonstick frying pan molds while you are in Jaggedpine. The filleting knife is easy but the fry pan will give you some trouble if your smithing skill is low. Make these two tools (one pan, several knives) then buy some bear meat and work on filleted bear while you're at the vendor. Once it trivials buy about 4 bags more and go to Jaggedpine for the bread and cheese. When patty melts trivial you have no choice but to farm for ingredients but at least you can skip the Tae Ew Sandwiches.
FARMERS - After 135 just go to Cazic Thule and load up on chunks of tae ew meat. And I mean load up good! You'll need hundreds upon hundreds of meats to raise your skill all the way to 268 so start the slaughter. Then just work on the Tae Ew recipes in order. The meat is not very common so it may take a while.
EVERYONE - The tae ew rolls and candied tae ew require the least amount of running around to farm ingredients. While you are in Cazic, save the Tae Ew blood and hides for tailoring later. Trust me on this.

That's it for now! I hope you've enjoyed my guide. Once I finish farming meat and get to 268 I'll work on something else, and the guide will be updated to reflect that.

Safe travels and happy hunting!

Jewelcraft

JEWELCRAFT

Jewelcraft, or "Jewelry Making" in EQ, is the most expensive skill to master. Bar none. The old school recipes are very simple. Put a bar of metal and a gem into your jewelcraft kit and hit combine. Poof, you have a piece of jewelry. For this reason I won't bother with a full guide but I'll list some tips and a nice trivial table.

TIPS
  • Anyone can be a jeweler, but only Enchanters can enchant metal bars.
  • Enchanted jewelry sells for significantly more than non-enchanted. If you have received all your gems for free (loot, friend, etc) AND enchanted all your metals, you can break even on the vendor cost of the metal. Well, in the long run you can.
  • Imbued jewelry sells for the same as regular enchanted. Don't waste your time (or your cleric/caster/etc friend's time) imbuing gems.
  • Bars of metal (silver, electrum, gold, platinum, and vellium) must be purchased from a merchant. Gems may be purchased or looted.
  • It will be much less expensive to farm your gems then to purchase them. Alternatively, swipe them from guildies. P.S. - Enchanter looking for rich guild.... ;)
  • The best place to craft is the Plane of Knowledge. The northern merchant building has two jewelcraft vendors - one sells most gems, the other sells most metal and a few more gems.
  • Thurgadin is the only place to buy Vellium but it isn't worth your time. Just look at the trivial chart if you don't believe me.

Trivial Chart - I couldn't code a table so I had to whip up this pic. My apologies for the size but I wanted to keep it legible.
Legend: S=silver, E=electrum, G=gold, P=platinum, and V=vellium.

SMITHING

The art of creating metal weapons and armor is called smithing. One who smiths is a blacksmith. But enough trivia. On to the recipes. (Thanks to Lumpa's guide for a lot of the progression!)

You'll see I have the trivial guide divided into small categories. I have grouped the progressions that use similar materials. Look at the main heading to see the supplies you'll need for all combines. The specific items listed underneath note the quantity variances.

Recipes

Metal Bits - 2 small pieces of ore, water flask - triv: 18
Dairy Spoon - 2 metal bits, water flask, scaler mold - triv: 74
Banded items: Sheet metal, water flask, appropriate sectional mold
.. Bracer - 1 sheet - triv: 95
.. Helm - 2 sheets - triv: 106
.. Mail - 3 sheets - triv: 115
Ornate items: HQ metal rings, bar of unenchanted metal, smithy hammer, water flask, chainmail pattern
.. Chain Bracelet - 1 ring, silver - triv: 122
.. Chain Coif - 2 rings, silver - triv: 132
.. Chain Mail - 3 rings, silver - triv: 142
.. Gold Coif - 2 rings, gold - triv: 146
.. Gold Mail - 3 rings, gold - triv: 155
.. Plat Chain Mail - 3 rings, platinum - triv: 162
Deep Cavern Ringmail items: HQ metal rings, swamp temper, smithy hammer, water flask, chainmail pattern (alternative to gold/plat ornate)
.. Bracelet - 1 ring - triv: 143
.. Coif - 2 rings - triv: 154
.. Tunic - 3 rings - triv: 167
Deep Cavern Steel items: MQ folded sheet metal, smithing hammer, water flask, superb leather padding, swamp temper, appropriate plate mold
.. Bracer - 1 sheet - triv: 190
.. Helmet - 2 sheets - triv: 204
.. Breastplate - 3 sheets - triv: 212
Embossed Rubicite Arrowhead - air-infused spring water, rubicite ore, file, embossing sketch - triv: 305

Other items needed:
Metal Bars - silver, gold, platinum - purchase at jewelcraft vendor (PoK)
File - metal bit, water flask, file mold
Sheet Metal - 2 small bricks of ore, water flask - triv: 31
Block of Ore - 3 large bricks of ore, water flask - triv: 27
MQ Folded Metal Sheet - smithy hammer, block of MQ ore, water flask - triv: 36
HQ Metal Rings - file, water flask, large brick of HQ ore
Swamp Temper (brewing) - Pondweed, water flask - triv: 122

Vendor locations:
Rubicite Ore - Riwel @ THF or Snokin Breaksteel @ Abysmal Sea (unverified)
Pondweed - Bazaar @ Vari Satiela, Red Dragon / Diamond (10pp)
Superb Leather Padding - Borik Darkanvil @ Plane of Knowledge (24pp)
Sheet Metal and Banded molds - Kaleras Darkanvil @ Plane of Knowledge (dwarf buidling)

What to do:

Two quick notes. (1) My smithing skill is 115 - I have not verified any recipes above banded yet. I got the info from the Allaclone, which may or may not be accurate. (2) Air-infused water drops frequently in Plane of Valor. You could make the arrowheads anytime after you start grinding there but it's best to save them until your skill is 200+ to maximize skillups.

If cash is no problem head for PoK and start with banded mail. Skill to 115 fast! If you'd rather recover some of your investment start with metal bits. Make at least 250 them before you move on to spoons. When spoons trivial, make a file then sell the rest of your metal bits. Continue following the trivial guide.

When you get to the ornate, expect to spend lots of cash. HQ ore needed for the rings is 19pp a block. And the platinum bars cost 100pp each! Success will recover some of your investment; failure will cost ~160pp per attempt. The Deep Cavern Ringmail is a good alternative to ornate platinum chain, as the swamp tempers are 10% the cost of platinum bars (if your brewing skill is good). It's your choice though. Spend time making swamp tempers, or farm some more cash, which ever is faster for you.

Tailoring

TAILORING

It is worth mentioning that Tailoring is one of, if not the, hardest trade skills to master. After skill 76 there are no vendor shortcuts. You'll just have to farm your way up the ranks so expect to spend a lot of time with this skill.

The best places to get animal skins include the East and West Karanas (lions drop lots of cat pelts). The spiders there drop lots of silk also. Jaggedpine is by far the best place to find bear pelts, but beware this will kill your Jaggedpine faction. (Food quest NPCs are on different faction though.)

In the recipie list I'm not going to mention skin/pelt/hide unless there are multiple variations. I'll just say "bear" or "cat". Also, LQ/MQ/HQ means low, medium, and high quality respectively. Tae Ew hides and blood are dropped by the lizards in Cazic Thule. Go there at lvl 60+ for some good exp while you're farming. Acrylia is found in several places but Grimlings in Acrylia Caverns give the best drop rate.

Recipes
Hardened Lizard Hide - flawless tae ew hide, tae ew blood vial - triv: 15
Woven Mandrake - 2 mandrake roots - triv: 66 (buy roots from alchemy vendors)
Picnic Basket - steel boning, woven mandrake - triv: 76
Handmade Backpack - HQ bear or rockhopper, backpack pattern - triv: 88
Tailored Quiver - HQ cat, quiver pattern - triv: 115
Studded Acrylia Mask - Superb rockhopper, paeala bark tannin, acrylia stud, mask pattern - triv: 188
Reinforced Acrylia Mask - Flawless rockhopper, paeala bark tannin, acrylia boning, mask pattern - triv: 242
Preserved Aged Muramite Scales - 1 aged scales (PoV drop) - triv: 255
Tae Ew Leather stuff - 1 or 2 hardened lizard hides (depending on recipe), appropriate pattern - trivs: 229-295
Tae Ew Hide Sack - 2 hardened lizard hides, backpack pattern - triv: 295

Other items needed:
Steel Boning (smithing) - water flask, file, small brick of ore* - triv: 37
Paeala Bark Tannin (brewing) - water flask, paeala bark - triv: 102 (Sirekoth Eshe @ PoK 103x275)
Acrylia Stud (smithing) - water flask, file, 3 acrylia bits - triv: 45
Acrylia Boning - water flask, file, small brick of acrylia ore - triv: 47
Acrylia Bits (smithing) - water flask, small piece of acrylia - triv: 24
*Bricks of ore don't stack. Yikes!

What To Do

For those who just want the 10-slot 100% WR bags:
Start with the hardened lizard hides. You're going to try to make the tae ew hide sacks anyway; might as well get some skillups with it. Then move to the woven mandrake since you can buy mandrake roots at vendors. Next, smith some steel bonings and make picnic baskets with all that woven mandrake. Once you hit 76 stop making baskets and sell the leftover materials. I suggest you continue to 115 at least, but with enough farming and patience you can make the T.E.H. sacks from here.

For everone else:
Just follow the recipe list. :) You can start with woven mandrake if you haven't farmed tae ew hides yet. The reinforced acrylia is listed as an alternative to the Tae Ew Leather items; Cazic Thule is a popular place to grab materials. Plane of Valor also drops lots of Aged Scales (used in several whip recipes) if you get tired of Cazic.

** Thank you Zolzimar for pointing out the scales recipe.
