@Mist

You make the assertion that Monks, Warriors, and Rogues and the most popular classes on the server because they are easy to play.

This completely overlooks the fact that until this point, those were the most powerful and efficient classes on the server. According to your logic, the server should be flooded with bards too..

Classes are played because of what they allow people to do with them. The day casters start soloing ST or Air trash for augs, Pet tanking warders and ToV dragons, or become irreplaceable DPS on raids due to increased rampage damage or PBAOE damage to melee, is the day casters become more prevalent on the server.

And they will do so regardless of how many buttons it takes to play them.

In my post I clearly stated that Monks, Rogues and Rangers are each capable of serious DPS with very little effort. The part where their "serious DPS" was noted is fairly key here, as far as my "completely overlooking" of facts.

There is a reason I didn't list Bards and that is both because their individual DPS is not at the same level (although their contribution to the group may very well be) and that controlling them at a peak performance level takes more effort than any of the other physical DPS classes.

You make the assertion that Monks, Warriors, and Rogues and the most popular classes on the server because they are easy to play.

Is it not true that the majority of the players on this server are boxers? Often playing at least two characters at a time?

When it comes to boxing more than two characters at a time is it more feasible to add a Necromancer box, alternating "ten or more" dots on a target at a time? Or to just stick a Monk / Rogue box on the target with only auto attack on?

The fact is that as long as this is a server dominated by players controlling multiple characters that the characters which require the least maintenance to perform sufficiently well will be the most popular characters.

Classes are played because of what they allow people to do with them.

And they will do so regardless of how many buttons it takes to play them.

I would completely agree with this statement if each person on the server only played one character. That is clearly not the case.

Instead, classes are played because of how they fit into an ideal boxing setup that will allow one person controlling multiple characters to defeat the widest range of content possible. So, in fact, the "number of buttons" it takes to control a character becomes a serious concern as the player's attention is split between an increasing number of characters.

The day casters ... become irreplaceable DPS on raids due to increased rampage damage or PBAOE damage to melee, is the day casters become more prevalent on the server.

No, that's the day that either rampage or PBAOE damage is reduced because the developers are aware that there needs to be a level playing field and that no DPS should be irreplaceable.

In the same way that Tyler is not going to make raids impossible without a form of crowd control from either an Enchanter or Bard, I doubt he would be willing to make one specific class or even one specific type of DPS a complete necessity for completing content. Doing so would be a poor solution because, rather than incenting people to play the class by making them either more fun or more approachable for players, it simply mandates that you bring the class for success, resulting in players who are not necessarily interested in the class being forced to play it if they want to succeed.

Main reason why I like eq2 combat system so much more than that of eq1, is that ALL classes need to use a good dozen of buttons to be even remotely useful - and yes this applies to warriors, monks and rogues too.

Unfortunately, the original EQ designers were not creative enough to come up with such system for eq1, and those 3 pure melee classes ended u being those with less number of buttons to control, as well as the MOST boring classes to play (at least IMHO), and at the same time, the easiest to box, or exactly same reason.

Those 3 classes ARE ultra popular TO BOXERS, specially cause they require VERY little effort to be useful, but in my eyes this in no way means that we should just SCRAP the other 11 classes, and pretend they do not even exist.

I will continue my effort to make the OTHER not so popular classes, fun and interesting to play, as giving them new powers, to make them stand out ;)

The new setup sounds like it would make the class more enjoyable to play to me.

I have been playing a necro for a few weeks now and I enjoy him a lot. I think the spells are pretty good and well balanced compared to other classes.

The pet isn't bad with focus items, aa's, and buffs my pet is right around 19k. The problem is he still gets eaten quick in the upper levels.

I also have a mage and the mage pet is much better suited to surviving fights in upper levels.

Could we look at the per stats. I don't think the necro pet should be as hardy as the mage pet, but perhaps a little closer would give it a fighting chance. :-)

Also would it be possible to findm a really cool dark skelly look for him? The Spectre's all look the same and the high end lev 70 pet looks the same as the prior pets. You cant even see the weapons he carries. :-)

Just a couple ideas, I welcome feedback from others.

actually there were a lot more specters before I revamped necro pets last time.
right now you get 4 of each type of skelies when you level up, then 4 specters, and finally you get a Shadow from your get epic 1.5 (you do see weapons on it)
Then you get Evil Eyes as swarm pets on epic 2.0
and I was reserving the zombie model for epic 3.0

love my necro tho I only bring it out to play on very rare days.
Just wish there were more items out there with good Poison and Disease focuses.
