On live I was by no means a top end mage or a huge raider but on the targets I did get in on I was up there on parses even when my pet poofed early on. Other mages made it on the parses and sometimes even topped them. I have noticed that mages are typically pretty slacktastic about getting in there and really pushing their dps. Sic pet, nuke once or twice and relax and watch everyone else work seems to be the norm (not all but some
). No one has seen mages in a good spot on parses? Are the mages you have had with you slacktastic or is the class just not ever going to get there even played hard?
Don't let Kron scare you away from Mages! When I used to play, I'd top the DPS Charts unless there was a donor ranger in the raid -- even then that was because we were doing a Tier 3 raid when donor weapons were tuned for T7.
Mages can be great DPS on raids if you gear yourself properly and get the proper LDoN spells. They're also great because of their short cast CoTH. You can coth 4 people before someone with an orb summons 1! Gogo mages.
I do have one complaint though, and that's with the LDoN heal. As Bresham stated above, you can heal your pet for 8k with it. The problem is that it's 10 second cast...that KILLS your dps if you have to stop nuking for 10 seconds just to heal a meager 8k (which will probably be doubled in dmg when the next rampage hits). Mage pets have great survivability yes, but they do need heals nonetheless. I'd recommend getting put in a group with some melee DPS who will be getting group heals, as your pet benefits from them as well.
